REVEALED! How to take your love of music and pictures and turn it into a memory-saving, story-telling, family-pleasing, money-making, awe-inspiring, tear-jerking, ego-boosting, laugh-getting, aha-moment applause machine.
Got a computer and a camera or camcorder? Then you've got the tools. I want to show you what others won't—how to use them to tell a story, impress and thrill audiences, and make or save money!
—how to use them to tell a story, impress and thrill audiences, and make or save money! You can pay between $2000 and $5000 to have a pro make a birthday video, memorial video, or family history. Even more if it's for a corporate event (say, $50,000... that's what I charged for one).
SO imagine what you'd save if you did it yourself. Imagine what you'd accomplish if you had the techniques in addition to the tools. You could:
- CREATE: A Gift that will last a lifetime
- CREATE: The Ultimate Family History
- CREATE: A side or even full time Business
- CREATE: A Lasting Memorial to a coworker or loved one
- CREATE: An Incredible Reunion, Anniversary, or Wedding Centerpiece
- CREATE: An Extraordinary, Emotional, Unforgettable Video, that will keep people talking for years, and keep the thanks, the bucks, or even the promotions rolling in!
- You can create great people stories on video. I can show you what you'd never learn in school, and what the pros don't want you to know.
If you're into video or photography, and you want to take your story-telling game farther than you ever thought you could, read on.
From the Desk of Brien Lee
Dear Friend,
Let's face it: times are tough. I don't know your exact situation, but I'm old enough to have seen all this before. The layoffs, the fear, the gas prices, the finger pointing and the blaming the other guy.
Except this time it all looks a bit tougher.
They say that's when the tough get going...
Well, personally, I ain't so tough.
But for most of my career, which is nearly—40 years now, I've worked for nobody other than myself.
See, I don't mind hard work. It just has to be work that I feel I can do well. It's also nice if it makes a difference in people's lives, brings families together, makes someone feel good, and makes a few bucks for myself.
I had to start somewhere. And when I started, what I wanted to do wasn't being taught in schools. In fact, it still isn't. But...
I Wanted to Give My Father the Gift No One Else Could Give
My father was turning 50. There was going to be a gathering of nearly 100 people at the Elks Lodge. I got my start wanting to give my father a gift he hadn't gotten. You know, something beyond the Old Spice, striped tie, golf ball kind of thing.
My father loved photography, and he loved slides, and he even had an 8mm film camera.
And he loved music. Frank Sinatra.
Hmmm... I thought... music and pictures. Put them in the right order, time the pictures to the music, tell a story—make a movie about Marty!
All it took was a slide projector and a tape recorder and a pile of records and about 3 days of work.
There was a little gizmo that made the slides change every time there was a silent tone from the soundtrack. So the right pictures came up with the right songs, and I even added clips of audio I had recorded with my Dad as a kid.
I know the people there all thought, "Now what is that whack job up to?" when I said I had a presentation.
But a dozen or so minutes later, they knew—and they were crying, clapping, cheering, and thinking—so that's what Marty Lee is all about.
It didn't hurt my ego that my gift stole the show. And was hauled out and played at every birthday for years.
That response is why, two years later, I started a "slide show" business, which became a video business, which became a web video business... the technology changed, but the basics were the same.
Tell a story. Make it emotional. Make it theatrical. Make it—a movie.
It was the middle of the 1970s gas crisis, but we made money. Through the years, plenty of money.
But that is not what was important to me. What really mattered to me was that I was getting paid to tell stories.
A lot of those were cut and dried product stories for corporations, but every once in a while, we were lucky enough to land what I called a "Tribute."
TRIBUTES: Stories of a Lifetime
What is a Tribute? It is a people story, about an individual, a couple, or a family.
Tributes are special. They are often the centerpiece of an event. They can be used at weddings, retirements, birthdays, anniversaries, or—as one grandparent couple recently proved to me—as the ultimate Christmas present to their children and grandchildren.
But I dare say they rarely do them as well as they could be done, and when they do, they charge a fair bit of cash—and even then may not get it exactly as the customer would like it.
But today, the physical tools for making videos—really excellent videos—are within the grasp of everyone.
A camcorder. A digital camera. A scanner. And a computer. And you've got what you need.
Except for the secrets only the pros know. How to tell a story. How to create interest. How to use music. How to pace the show. How to create the emotional moments that lead to tears and cheers, and ultimately, the standing ovation.
So, why am I telling you this?
For the past 35 years, I often produced tributes for family members, but during my career I produced them for corporate leaders, other families and individuals, even politicians (yup, they have real lives too!).
I got to know the people, their stories, their likes and dislikes, their family and friends, and I was able to put together the stories of their lives.
Sometimes I was privileged to be there when they hit the play button.
What a rewarding time—in emotional pay back, and sometimes, in financial pay back.
I'm now at an age where I've accomplished what I set out to do in the production world, and along the way I found I could teach my methods to others. I hired hundreds of employees, trained them, and watched them succeed—some even started very profitable businesses. Many won awards. All left with a ton more knowledge and capability than when they entered.
I taught my methods at corporations for $2000 a session.
But today, the power is in the hands of everyday people who can make videos with affordable gear, plop videos onto YouTube, and label themselves a producer.
But I have yet to see a real, full-blown, emotionally satisfying tribute video online. People try. But they don't know some of the basics that go deeper than "which camcorder" or "what software." They still don't know how to tell a story that moves audiences.
I've decided to shift into the teaching and sharing part of my career. Great people stories and family stories bring people together, reduce conflict, and put the focus on families and friendship again.
If I can teach you how to do that, I will have done my part for you, my career, and—to a certain extent—society. Most importantly, you'll move audiences, and even save or make money doing it!
INTRODUCING: Tribute Videos for Love & Money

This is my first book—the book where I share all the basics on how to create a great Tribute video. The uses are endless (and listed below). The value, as you'll see, is incredible, because it's part of a package that is more than just the book. It is comprehensive teaching and support so that you can save or make money making "Tributes" and develop an incredible new storytelling capability along the way.
If you're reading this, you obviously have an interest in the photography or video worlds. You've dabbled—with some success, perhaps, and thought—I wish I could do something—really something—with these photos or video tapes.
Maybe you've got an occasion coming up where you'd like to give the ultimate gift ... a gift that they'll never forget.
Maybe you want to add value to what you do for your company... and become the go-to person for videos and meetings.
Maybe you want the satisfaction of self-expression—this is an art, after all.
Maybe you want to impress the boss, your mate, your family, friends or coworkers.
Maybe you want to honor someone.
Maybe you want to leave a legacy.
Maybe you want to start a business.
Well, all of the above is possible, if you know what makes a good tribute video.
And that's what this book is all about.
It is about how to tell a video story that is about people.
It is about how to put together all the elements.
It is about how to make an audience jump out of their seats.
It is not a technical manual, but I do cover technical things, from microphones to computers.
In short, it's about ALL the things that most video sites and tutorials CAN'T tell you.
In it, you'll learn:
- How to create visual themes for your story
- The Universal Story that Hollywood ALWAYS uses
- How to harness the emotional power of music
- When to let the pictures do the talking
- How to conduct interviews to get real, full answers (not "yes" or "no"—how do you make a movie with that?)
- How to decide on the length of a project
- Short on pictures? Here's how to make a tribute where no one will know the difference!
- What kinds of tools you should use, including, but not limited to:
- PC or Mac
- Video editing program
- Slide show programs
- Type generators
- Effects programs
- Special transitions
- 3D programs
- Scanner
- Digital still camera (optional)
- Photo editing program
- Digital camcorder or deck
- VHS player
- DVD player
- Sound "ripping" or conversion program
- Tripod/light/microphone
- Monitors and projectors
- How to come up with the timeline of the story
- When to use stills and when to use video
- How to scan your pictures
- How to get old films and videos into your computer
- How to write a script, even if you're not much of a writer
- How to be "creative" (Hint—you are.)
- Show shaping, and the key elements you must have so the audience stays with you all the way
- How to create the "Ken Burns" effect, and how to know when you shouldn't in the first place
- The "7-thought" rule
- Acknowledging tragedy
- Contrasts
- Theatrical logic
- Picture sequences
- How to create some of the popular effects you see on tv
- How to create the audio-video dance that keeps audiences glued to their seats
- How to find, select, cut, and use music
- How to create soundtracks that drive tears and applause
- How to "test" your video
- How to show your video (and this one is really important)
- And how to make money doing all of the above
In short, we're telling all. But in an easy to follow way.
UH, that's nice, but who are YOU, you're asking?
Here's what some students, clients, and colleagues have had to say:
I first met Brien Lee when I was a student at Marquette University. Brien taught a media production/communications class that had so much impact, it has served as the foundation for many of the choices I have made throughout my career. As an instructor, Brien's teaching style is engaging and clear, and he has a tremendous ability to blend just the right amount of theory with practical application. Outside of the classroom, Brien is always available and he willingly serves as a mentor to students who embrace the curriculum and wish to know more. Without hesitation, he shares his knowledge and takes great pride in watching his students succeed. At the end of the semester, I left the class knowing that I had just received real-world experience and a great yardstick by which to measure my own professional contributions.
Julie Santapoalo, Marketing Executive
I had the pleasure of working with Brien for nearly two decades. He brought out the creative best in me and every member of the staff. I watched delighted clients approve end product far better than anything they had imagined. Brien continues to work the same way to this day. He's accumulated a roster of highly satisfied clients and a production portfolio second to none.
Linda Duczman, Writer and Public Relations Consultant
Brien is an expert producer, writer and director, as good as it gets for crafting stories for video and moving images. For your audience, he will elevate them, levitate them, turn them around and put them right where you want them: believing in your message, passionately motivated about your product, business or service, and ready for action. Trust him with any video message where *impact* is the desired result.
Bill Finn, Owner, Digital Production Company
Brien is the master when it comes to storytelling. He knows what a client needs before the client knows they need it. It was a privilege to work with him and learn from the best. No matter the medium, a good story is a good story—and Brien can go right to the heart of it to make you laugh, make you cry, make you laugh until you cry, make you think, make you open your wallet, make you change your mind, whatever you want your story to do.
